This story takes place between the years 1937 and 1947. Blima Weisstuch is a Jewish girl that lives in Poland with her family. This years may not seem important but to the Jewish people those years were when Adolf Hitler was raising to power in Europe. Blima stoped going to school in the eight grade and she works with her aunt in her aunts bakery. Blima 20 years old should be married and with children because thats there tradition but she only has a boyfriend and is not thinking about that.

Blumke as her sister Adele and family call Blima is very a very pretty girl.Adele picks up Blima to go to there brother Victors house to babysit there nieces. Blima remembers that her brother Zalman died when he was just two months old. After Blima and Adele come home and Blima has a serious talk with her mother. She didnt believe that she pretty and has very low self esteem. Her mother of course tells her she is beautiful. Later Blima says that in a few months she will really not care how she looks.
